I just got back from my church's youth group camp and I've learned so much! The chapel was called Made to Worship and was about why it's important to worship God. The speaker compared worship to plants and I would like to share it with you, so the next three posts will be all about worship.

The word worship can be described with seven words: Wonder, an Open Heart, Receiving, Singing, Hope, Individual Faith, and the Power of the Holy Spirit. These seven words are actually an acronym for the word worship and today we will be looking at the first two letters/words, Wonder and Open Heart.

Worship = Wonder

How is Wonder related to worship, and how can you compare it to a seed?

We are to only worship God because He is the only one worthy of worship. If I were to say that you should worship me, you wouldn't do it because I'm not perfect or worthy of praise. The first step of Worship is Wonder. Be in awe of God's mighty power. Be in awe of His amazing creation. The song Creator by Phil Wickham has two lines that fit perfectly with this.

"This my great and everlasting hope

I've been saved and heaven is my home

I can't wait for that day

When I see You face to face

For I was made to magnify my Maker

Yes I was saved to walk beside my Savior

I'm created to worship my Creator.

-Phil Wickham

I was made to magnify my Maker. I was created to worship my Creator. Aren't those such amazing lines?

Wonder = The Seed

Wonder is the beginning of worship. It's the first step to worshiping our amazing Creator. Wonder is the seed of worship because just like a seed is the first step to planting, wonder is the first step to worship. In Psalm 147 it reads, "How good to sing praises to our God! How delightful and how fitting!" (vs 1). It is good to sing to God. How fitting because we were created by God.

In verses 7-9 it reads, "Sing out your thanks to the LORD; sing praises to our God with a harp. He covers the heavens with clouds, provides rain for the earth, and makes the grass grow in mountain pastures. He gives food to the wild animals and feeds the young ravens when they cry." (Psalm 147:7-9).

This Psalm is all about how wonderful and amazing God is. We can be in awe of His incredible creation. He covers the heavens with clouds, provides rain, makes the grass grow, and feeds the animals. It's crazy if you think of all the things He has created. Everything. Every single ocean, mountain, field, animal, plant, and petal on a flower. And you. How crazy cool!

Worship = An Open Heart

We must have an Open Heart if we are to worship the one and true God. An open heart to do what God wants us to do, no matter what. God will put things in your life that are hard, but everything He does is for your good. I'm going to quote another song.

"I love Your voice

You have led me through the fire

In darkest night

You are close like no other...

'Cause all my life You have been faithful

And all my life You have been so, so good

With every breath that I am able

Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God.

-"Goodness of God" by Bethel Music and Jenn Johnson

In the darkest night, God is close to us. He will never leave us. Even through the hard times, God will never leave us. We must have an open heart to hard times because God will always lead us through those valleys.

An Open Heart = The Soil

Before you can start planting, you will have to let God break up your soil. Your life might be going great, but then someone you love will pass away, or your parents get a divorce, or some other hard thing will happen. This is God breaking up your soil. Sometimes God will break up our soil before we can plant anything. This is the goodness of God. Everything has a reason, even if it doesn't look like it.

Are there any weeds that have to be picked from your soil?

"So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don't be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Because of theses sins, the anger of God is coming. You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world. But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don't lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds." (Colossians 3:5-9 NLT)

Is there anything in these verses you need to get rid of?

Let God be the one in charge. Let Him weed out all those sins. Let Him break up your soil.

Here are some other things the speaker touched on that I thought were really cool.

  • The posture of planting is on our knees, getting low. Getting low to plant peace, love, and joy. By getting low on our knees, we are being humble.

  • A seed has to die before it can grow. We must be humble before we can start to grow.

  • A seed needs the sun to grow, just like we need the Son for us to grow.

  • Do you start out your day thinking about king me, or King God?

  • Seeds have to be planted in the dark in order for them to grow.

  • God sometimes puts us in pits where the only thing to do is look up and let God pull us out.

If you want to dig a little deeper into this topic, you can look up these verses:

-Psalm 95

-Colossians 2:2-6

-Isaiah 40

-Psalm 147

-Psalm 148

-Hosea 8:7
